Coastal Oaks Preserve is a multi-phase conservation and access project located along South U.S. Highway 1 in Vero Beach, Florida. The project encompasses roadway improvements, a new entry drive, parking facilities, an elevated arrival boardwalk, pavilion, maintenance storage areas, grading and drainage enhancements, stormwater management systems, native planting, habitat restoration, and invasive species removal.

Coyle & Caron partnered with the Indian River Land Trust to help bring the first phase of this visionary project to completion. As landscape architects, our team was challenged to thoughtfully balance the introduction of visitor amenities with the preservation of the site's sensitive ecosystems, native habitats, and wildlife communities.

The first phase establishes a carefully choreographed arrival experience that integrates the built environment with the surrounding natural landscape. Visitors are welcomed by a series of framed views into the preserve and move through four ecosystems, including flatwood, meadow, hammock, and wetland. A total of 30 acres of former citrus grove was restored with over 50,000 small container plants. More than 150 native plant species were used, including grasses, perennials, shrubs, palms, understory trees, and canopy trees. This ecological landscape creates seasonal interest, enhances habitat value, and introduces visitors to the rich biodiversity of Florida's coastal environments before they reach the pavilion.

From this gateway, guests are invited to explore trails, engage in environmental education, and immerse themselves in the beauty of the preserve. The result is a destination that not only provides meaningful connections to nature today but also inspires future generations of environmental stewards and conservation advocates.
